Student Voice: Discovering the Timeless Beauty and Culture of Akita – Diana LINARES GONZALEZ, Arizona State University, U.S.A.
Diana LINARES GONZALEZ from Arizona State University, U.S.A. is participating in our exchange program for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. We would like to introduce her experience at AIU.
Akita is a prefecture of breathtaking beauty, offering a slower pace of life compared to more populated areas in Japan. Its picturesque landscapes transform with the seasons – from snowy winters to lush green summers – creating a uniquely captivating experience.
Having traveled across Japan, I can confidently say that Akita’s scenery stands out as some of the most beautiful in the world.
Living on campus at AIU was my first experience living away from home. The campus’s distance from the city fosters a close-knit community where students often come together to study, join activities, or simply relax. This strong sense of connection made adjusting to life here much easier.
Akitas local dishes, such as Kiritanpo hot pot and fresh seafood, offer a glimpse into the region’s rich culinary traditions. The Akita Kanto, a unique performance that originates in Akita, is one of my favorite aspects of Akita culture – something that truly needs to be experienced in person. There is even a Kanto Team here at AIU that exchange students are welcome to join.
Namahage, another tradition unique to Akita, will send chills down your spine with its historical lore and performances.
The people in Akita, both on and off-campus, are incredibly welcoming. At AIU, the faculty are supportive and friendly. Due to the lack of foreigners the locals are genuinely excited and curious about your background while eager to share their own culture.
Choosing AIU was a decision driven by my excitement to experience Japanese culture and learn the language. Coming to Akita has allowed me to go beyond the surface of mainstream Japan and be able to immerse myself in Japanese traditions and explore the essence of the “real” Japan.
Akita’s deep-rooted values and unspoiled beauty offer an experience that feels timeless—a side of Japan that deserves to be shared and preserved.
To future students: AIU is a place where you can find peace, connect with nature, and immerse yourself in the beauty of traditional Japan. It’s not just a place to study but a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and experience something truly unforgettable.
