Student Voice: Ronan Kelly, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

Ronan Kelly is a first-semester exchange student from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

Academic Experience

My major is Modern Language Studies, and my goal is to teach in the future so I have been taking Japanese language as well as education and teaching courses here.

Japanese Language

Japanese is my favorite class and it was my main reason for coming. I’m in 206-level and we have about 15 students. I really like having the small class size and I like that we meet almost every day, because we get that constant, focused attention that helps with language ability development and build up the habit of practicing every day. I also like that my teacher assigns quizzes each class because it helps keep all of us accountable.

English Teaching Methods

I didn’t know what the “Teacher’s License Program” was when I chose this class, but I was interested in the content. I’m not necessarily planning to teach in Japan, but it’s been eye-opening to learn everything involved in teaching here. The course has also been the most difficult – for our final exam, we had to produce a lesson plan and teach a 50-minute class!

I’ve also been taking Comparative Education, Popular Culture in Language Learning & Teaching, and Korean, so my classes keep me very busy!
