Fall 2016 Study Abroad Fair a Success!

Student Hall was packed for the Spring 2016 Study Abroad Fair, with students representing 54 partner universities from 22 countries volunteering to recruit new students to study abroad.

This was the most active fair I’ve seen at AIU.

“This was the most active fair I’ve seen at AIU.” – Student Participant

All Akita International University students are required to study abroad for a year at one of our partner universities. The biannual study abroad fair is their best opportunity to get information about their options. Exchange students from our partners, as well as AIU students who have returned, pass out pamphlets and promotional goods supplied by our partners, and talk about their own personal experiences to encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

I put together my own slide show about my home university to show to students and managed to pass out all of the pamphlets my home university had sent.

This year, there was one unexpected visitor to the Study Abroad Fair: Professional Sumo Wrestler Takekaze-zeki, an Akita native, who had come to give a talk for students later that afternoon. While Takekaze-zeki’s sporting obligations keep him from studying abroad himself, he was interested to learn about AIU’s study active exchange program. Very few international students – or even Japanese citizens – have the opportunity to meet sumo wrestlers in person, so it was a unique opportunity for all the fair’s participants.

Thank you to all of our volunteer students and partner universities who made this fair a success!

This year we had great support from AIU Festival Committee members for the venue decoration. Thanks to their great help, the fair venue became a festive place!
